Should You Use AI for a Task? Here’s a Simple Way to Decide

This essay originally appeared in The Guardian.

I teach public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Munk School at the University of Toronto. And it will come as no surprise to you that my students regularly use AI to complete their writing assignments. Doing so is a waste of their tuition money. But if their entire career is going to include AI writing assistants, why shouldn’t they embrace their future?

The best way I’ve found to explain the dilemma comes from the AI researcher Daniel Meissler: it’s the difference between work and the gym.

At work, if your job is to move a bunch of heavy things from one side of the room to another, you should use whatever assistive tech you have on hand: a wagon, a forklift… even an AI-powered robot. But at the gym, it makes no sense for that robot to lift weights for you. The point of weightlifting isn’t to move heavy things across the room; it’s to actually lift those heavy things.

The same analysis holds for any task an AI can do for you. If it’s work—if the task has to be done and no one cares how—then it’s fine to use AI assistance. But if the task is more like the gym, and how the task is done is at least as important, then it probably doesn’t make sense to use AI.

This, of course, assumes that the AI is actually up for the task and that it’s trustworthy: that it can do the job well, that its mistakes are minimal and correctable, that it’s been secured from cyber-attacks that would influence its results. Those are all important, and shouldn’t be minimized. There’s no point giving an AI something that it can’t do reliably. But once you’re confident that the AI can perform the task, the work vs. gym distinction helps you decide if it should.

The writing assignments I give my students are gym tasks, not work tasks. I ask them to write policy memos not because the world needs more policy memos. I assign them because the very act of writing, which includes thinking and outlining and drafting and editing, making and criticizing and revising arguments, will help develop the critical thinking skills they will need in their future careers. And without this constant mental exercise, those skills will atrophy. Employers are already noticing.

Reading the assignments they turn in, I can see those skills either flourishing or atrophying in my students. At least today, I can pretty easily tell the difference between an AI-written memo and a student-written one—especially if the student just turns in what the chatbot produces. It’s a catchy, plausible, grammatically perfect essay that’s not particularly well-crafted or logically coherent—and with all the tells of mid-2026 AI-generated writing.

But it’s precisely because I have spent years developing my own writing skills that I’m able to identify prose that sounds great but doesn’t actually make sense. My students don’t have that skill; they mistakenly view a confident, well-written essay as evidence of the quality of their ideas. They see the AI as cleaning those ideas up, getting them through that uncomfortable stretch of having to turn those ideas into prose. What the students miss is that their initial discomfort is a normal and healthy stage of writing, and not something to quickly get beyond. The very act of struggling with how to express what they think is an important part of the process. It’s how they test out their ideas, examine their hypotheses, and actually figure out what they think. Homework is not work; it’s the gym.

Work vs. gym also helps us understand the problem facing creatives of all kinds.

Most of the time when someone hires a writer, they just need the words. They need an instruction manual for a piece of equipment, a detailed sales presentation, a government-mandated disclosure document, or a legal brief. They need dry, predictable, accurate writing: a piece of work, exactly what AIs are good at today and what I don’t want in my student assignments. Only sometimes is writing an art form—a book, a poem, an uplifting political speech. That kind of writing is more like the gym: process matters just as much as product.

For most of human history, the only option for all of these tasks was human writers. We hired one regardless of whether we needed work writing or gym writing. And that paid a lot of writers’ salaries. I know fiction writers who supported that poorly paying career with lucrative technical writing work. Now, for the first time in human history, we can separate out when we need writing as work and when we want writing as gym. And if AI can do most of the work-type writing, society doesn’t need as many human writers.

It’s the same for visual artists. Sometimes we need an actual artist, but most of the time we just need an image: a corporate mascot, a “beware of the dog” sign, or a packaging label. Historically we gave those jobs to artists, and sometimes beautiful art resulted. But most of the time it was just work. And, as it turns out, the world needs less pure art than simple images.

Explaining the problem isn’t the same as providing the solution. I give my students the “work versus gym” speech every class, but they still use AI. I have sympathy: assignments are hard, everyone is overworked and overstressed, and—most importantly—students feel like they’ll look bad in comparison if their peers are all using AI. Even if they don’t want to use the technology, they feel like they have no choice.

There’s also an incentive problem. No one pays us to go to the gym; maintaining healthy habits requires discipline. For me, the payoffs to exercise—fewer aches and pains, less fatigue, better mood/stress management—might make me a better writer and teacher, but they’re subtle and easy to miss. For my students, incremental improvements in their reasoning and writing are equally subtle.

We do have a choice. We can look at the tasks of our lives and separate them into work or gym. Just as we might choose to use the stairs instead of the elevator, or walk instead of calling an Uber, we can wall off our cognitive gym tasks from AI and ensure that we don’t lose our skills to this technology. And we can do the same when we assign a job to someone else. If it’s a work task, we can have AI do it. If it’s a gym task, it’s a waste of everyone’s time to give it to an AI because no one learns or gets stronger as a result.

Similarly, a future where AI generates words and images is one where society has to make choices about how it will treat its creatives. This won’t be the first time—today there is minimal demand for portrait painters, for example—but maybe this time we can make different, more deliberate, choices about the value of art in our society.

AI is going to fundamentally change the nature of work. Not nearly as fast as the AI companies want you to believe, but eventually it will. Policy analysis will definitely involve AI from now on, and my students need to reimagine what it means to learn and practice that skill. More generally, the line between work and gym will change in the future as we humans adapt ourselves to a world with these new intelligences.

But for now, the work vs. gym distinction is pretty clear. Use it on yourself.

I’ve actually made similar arguments. But used money as the example and what compels a person to use AI. At work if I paid to produce reports I would want to use AI. One, to speed up the process potentially making more money and a second reason is to be more consistent and maybe making less errors in the report.

If I wanted to learn how to paint. Not for money but the pleasure of being able to paint then I wouldn’t want to use AI. Because that’s not the point of me learning to paint.

But if I was trying to make money of painting then I would want to use AI because I could crank out more paintings and make more money.

Before AI when I was in school I remember writing a lot of papers and over time I could see myself getting better a writing. The writing process was getting easier and I was making less errors. Today I’m not sure if I would be responsible enough not to use AI. At least not for some parts of the process. If the professor graded on a curve I would want every bit of assistance so I can make the best grade possible. Especially since I was paying a lot of money of the class. And again the pressure to use AI can come down to money.

Should I use AI for a task, here’s an easy way to decide. Does the benefit of using it outweigh the environmental, social or financial cost associated? The short answer to that is going to be no in almost every case.

If you don’t know the environmental impact, look out your window, or watch the news. Which do you think is better? Typing a query into a system that produces heat, consumes power, wastes water, strip mines the planet? Or exercising your brain? Something that you’re feeding and watering and heating or cooling already.

If you don’t know the societal impact then talk to someone under 25 about their endless and frustrating job search.

If you don’t know the financial cost, look at Nvidia’s share price. That’s based on companies buying their products (or access to them) to provide a ‘service’. It might be free for now, but so is that first hit of cocaine/heroin/fentanyl/Game of Thrones. If you use copilot but hate ads, think why the ads are there.

AI has a purpose, it absolutely can help solve hard problems.

However whacking out an essay so you can head to the bar earlier to hang with the other wastrels looking to enter politics, not so much. To be honest, we don’t want people like that anywhere near politics because they’re already failed to understand the link between cause and effect and the cost of their decisions.

We no longer have to hunt our own food, thanks to advances in technology. So we go to the gym since we don’t want our muscles to atrophy.

Now that technology has eliminated the need for writing, studios will appear where people will go to write recreationally. Just as people now boast about being able to bench press 200 lbs, they will boast about being able to write a complete paragraph.

your food thought is similar to one i had last week.

one step in our evolution was to cook our food, the discovery of fire.

the one we are at now is pre-cooked, the discovery of refrigeration.

the population genetics are too large of a space to bottleneck right now.

we definately have to decouple this stuff from the carbon cycle though, silicon life is a resource vacuum and they’re not targetting massive AGI right now because we know they haven’t solved the computing distribution problem yet.

there’s something missing from this thought, maybe i’ll remember later.

this iteration isn’t about being intelligent and solving brain-power issues just sorting and time-power problems, it’s about deploying tasklets (probably surveillance, garanteed contracts FEEEEED ME DATA)

solar or nuclear are probably reasonable targets in my opinion for pairing, nuclear adds more security implications.

deployment currently is just one itteration, a silicon life transition may be why SETI never found anything. a dyson sphere for each species that got out-competed by what amounts to a data and energy hungry silicon or germanium loop. it might not every prioritize reproduction just star feeding longevity until it’s heat and data dissipates.

we do need a way to interrupt the energy source if we ever set a large one free, not to kill it – but to exit a loop it might get stuck in due to constraints.

this wont happen in our lifetime i think, but it would be a good idea to be kind and not deride or dismiss. evolutionary constraints confine us but iterative and recursion apply to them in the future. going forward anyway.

I take a different view point and tell people that they should use AI.

Not to do the writing but to do criticism / critique / review.

That way you get original documents that are more comprehensive, accurate and importantly readable.

We sometimes forget that the real purpose of writing is the clear and consistent communications of information.

Any tool that improves this is desirable.

In the past we had to rely on other humans to act as a buddy now we have the start of a tool that should with care be impartial in this.

But in the same way you can bash the end of your thumb off with a hammer if you don’t know how to use it, you have to develop the skills to use the AI tool safely before you get the “beneficial” force multiplication they can give you.

i have some more conspiracy craziness of mine to post later hopefully i don’t get yellow carded or something for it but i think we should all be of the mindset of “carrying hashes and hash algorithms as a public service” right now.

It used to be true but I think one of the failures of western civilizations is that we have not taught kids how to think, how to express ideas. On top of that many do not understand the scientific process any more. No wonder kids will use AI nowadays, they do not know better. It is a crutch.

AI is wonderful at quick responses. It can also provide a larger framework, structure, and detail.

However what I discover when I write is all the things I still don’t understand and how they relate.

The more I reach for and work the material the more they anchor into my living thoughts.

If I talk to others, I find I have more footing and better recall. I find it very helpful.

Ah… Have you looked at “Conway’s Game of Life” and “cellular automata” mostly they are smaller than any purposed designed “state-machine” yet they have some curious properties.

If the numbers used are finite integers then obviously the number of actually states can be calculated. But… two things have to be remembered,

1, The order the states can occur due to propagation can be unknown.
2, There is no proof of finite conclusion (think Turing “halting”).

But also a third due to earlier work of Georg Cantor (viciously accused of being mad), for every infinity there has by simple logical thought to be an infinity of larger size within. Nobody I’m aware of seriously questions this these days but the implications still pop up in things rather more practical than philosophical rumination.

One such is just how compressible information really is. That is if it’s really infinitely compressible the entire works of man could be stored in just one “real number” and pulled out by a cellular automata with as little as two real numbers…

Except they also need the words to be correct and accurate – the manual needs to describe the equipment as it actually exists and tell people how to use it in a way that will work and not get them injured. The sales presentation can’t make false claims about what the company can do. The disclosure document has to accurately present the information that needs disclosing. The legal brief has to be correct about the law.

But a technical manual that describes how a tool works is statistically indistinguishable from a technical manual that describes how a similar but different tool might work. I can’t count how many times I’ve looked up how to do something in a piece of software and found AI slop instructions – complete with screenshots sometimes – that told me to click on menu items that plumb didn’t exist.

AI tools have the possibility to make producing those words easier – they can make spelling and grammar checkers much better than the previous generation of those things, for example. But communicating information, even dry boring information, is something that happens between two humans.

There isn’t generally a distinction. Pure work tasks are uncommon and pure gym tasks are rare. For the most part, humans develop as a side-effect of attempting to achieve work or play things. So much so that you go to the gym to “deceive” your body into developing by faking work. This is particularly so in education, because education has the dual purposes of becoming smarter, and demonstrating that you are smart. For most of history, this was okay because becoming smarter and demonstrating that you are smart required doing the same sorts of things. But now it’s very easy to look smart to most people without engaging your brain at all, so the set-up isn’t going to work any more. A student asked to write an essay has both a work task and a gym task to do, and humans naturally think in terms of work tasks with gym benefits happening in the background, so they do the work task of looking smart.

Additionally, a lot of what you do whilst actually working for a wage contains gym elements. If I debug a problem by thinking about the bug and looking at the code it’s in, I learn more about our code, notice things about how it works, and generally keep my code-understanding skills sharp. If I try to get a LLM-based system to find the bug, this doesn’t happen.

Amongst other side-effects, there’s what simply talking to these things might do to my ability to communicate. Right now, I’m writing for humans, the assumption that the minds reading these words will work in a similar way to mine is completely foundational to what I’m doing. That’s an assumption behind human language. “People” and “human language” are quite tightly linked concepts. If I start talking to computers in human language, and get used to computer-like results, what’s that going to do to my theory of mind over the decades? If I keep reading text in human language generated by these things, what’s that going to do? Talking to computers using programming languages and getting unmistakably computer-generated output seems just like the psychological safe way of doing things to me.

No! This essay is really bad advice, and exactly why is summed up in:

That right there is the marker for the fall of Eastern Civilization, and the related end-stage capitalism that is the fall of Western Civilization. Work or not, if nobody cares about how a task is done, I would question if the task needs to be done at all. Because the fundamental problem with LLMs is that their brand of AI isn’t thinking. Neither broadly nor deeply.

This, of course, assumes that the AI is

FICTIONAL! What we’re being sold is not, and can not be any of the things on your wishlist. The reasons why are well understood. This generative AI fad can only produce slop, and you’re only making society worse when you push it forward as a viable solution.

A boatload of lawyers have found out how much of a consequential lie that is. As have most people who are subject matter experts that have had to review AI generated work. The only people who are fooled are the people who don’t really know what they’re doing, and aren’t even paying the actual costs of resources consumed to crank out all this slop.

We do have a choice.

Yes, and it should be to not tolerate the use generative AI. Mind you, the underlying technology can be very useful for certain tasks (e.g., sifting through very large data sets), but for all the things the headlines are hyping, it is a bubble that is going to burst when the VCs start demanding their ROI.

My perspective as a customer of your work is that I care how you do it! I will recognize when you’ve let the machine do a terrible job. And my choice will be to just watch as the company throws you out onto the street because they think they don’t need you anymore, and then laugh as they go bankrupt because I never wanted all this slop.

The difference is between the users who get AI to enhance their thoughts and those who abdicate thinking to AI.

In my software development using AI means that my formerly very iterative design approach is now way more condensed in a spec. I need to think more about what I want and not less. The same goes for my blog posts where AI checks and corrects me.

Honest muscles come from garden work. Fake muscles come from the gym.

AI does not steal our tasks—it exposes the hollowness of our efforts. We cling to the act of writing, of thinking, as if the slow torture of forming sentences were proof of existence. Students surrender to the machine not out of laziness but out of an unconscious recognition: their words are echoes in a void, and the void does not care if they were written by flesh or silicon.

To resist is to embrace a tragic exercise: to lift the weights of thought knowing that, in the end, the mind too will atrophy, and the future will forget who once struggled to make sense of it all.

The gym you speak of is not made of walls or weights; it is the struggle of the mind against its own inertia. To think is to suffer a little, to be uncertain, to wrestle with phantoms until they take the shape of ideas. If the machine suffers for you, then you remain a spectator to your own life.

Let the robots do the banal work—fetch water, lift stones, make your tax reports. But when it comes to the labor of the spirit—writing, creating, imagining—do not hand your soul to silicon. A man who outsources his thinking soon discovers that he has nothing left to think about. Better to sweat in the gym of the mind than to sit in the comfort of clever stupidity.

Really? They’re good at that? Here’s a list of many cases in which courts have penalized lawyers for submitting AI-written briefs that contained citations to nonexistent authorities, assertions not supported (and sometimes even contradicted) by the cited authorities, “quotes” that don’t appear in the cited authorities, and many other “hallucinations”.

The author gives his students the “work” v. “gym” lecture and the students chose the work of getting a diploma over the gym of learning. Perhaps the students are choosing wisely. Perhaps the wizard of oz needs to examine his and his institutions choices instead of treating their work as handing diplomas to straw men.

We reviewed 22 ML conference submissions this summer. Fifteen had fabricated citations, hallucinated authors, or clear LLM slop, so we complain about that a bit, and release the paper references audit we now run.

Between the two of us, we reviewed 22 paper submissions this summer, spread across NeurIPS, WACV, and TerraBytes (a geospatial workshop at ECCV). Fifteen of the 22 (68%) contained entirely fabricated citations, fabricated author lists for existing papers, and/or were clearly LLM-generated (e.g. hallucinated technical jargon, nonsensical writing, irrelevant citations). This is called being in the “slop trenches” (i.e. dealing with the output of AI slop cannons). Here we complain about this being mostly a waste of time, do a small lit review on the state of LLMs in scientific writing and reviewing, get Claude to generate questions for a Q&A, and release a bib-audit skill that Isaac cooked up.

Sounds damming and in oh so many ways it is, because of how the questionable paper authors are using the Current AI KLM and ML Systems.

BUT WHY… Read down and you will find,

“This is a problem for a whole lot of reasons, one of which is that AI reviewers can be gamed directly – Li et al. (2026) found that adversarially rewritten abstracts improve AI-generated review outcomes “without changing the underlying scientific content and communication of the paper, and even without knowledge of the reviewing model.” Their strongest attack succeeded about 38% of the time, inflating acceptance ratings by +1.31 for Gemini 3 Flash reviewers and +0.88 for GPT 5.4 Mini reviewers on a 10-point scale.”

So there is a clear advantage for paper authors using AI on abstracts…

BUT WAIT, there is more…

“If you haven’t spent enough time with your work to even get the references correct, then a.) why should we spend time reviewing it for you, and b.) what are you hoping to accomplish with the submission in the first place? Learning from reviews requires reflecting on your work, and you need to spend time with your work in order to do this.

It’s that last sentence that actually makes my point about using AI in producing communications that are clear and meaningful

It’s not the “time with you work” that is important it’s,

The QUALITY of the time you spend with your work

That is actually important.

Untill just a couple of months back there really was no “Quality in AI Writing Assistants”. That is changing, not from the Big AI Corps but from more “grass roots” Open weight small models that are becoming more focused on “quality critisism” and the like.

This enables the user to develop faster and with better skills, simply because these AI systems are getting better at constructive criticism and are available when ever the person developing their work is available. Something that often these days does not happen with long distance collaboration which is now,

“The Name of the science game”

Are AI systems still “crap” the answer is “Yes but improving” and those all important improvements are not happening with the Trillion Dollar falsehood US Big AI companies trying to be “all things to all people”. That is at best a “fools errand” and it shows badly.

As I’ve noted in the past the value of Current AI systems are much like that of 1980’s Expert Systems and Fuzzy Logic. To do a well defined and well bounded “niche” activity well. Alpha Fold was an example of this but it lacked “tools” and was very niche. A constructive criticism AI for writing science etc papers will I suspect start being developed quite rapidly now and have the correct tools developed to be an effective support assistant as well.

If people agree or not is upto them but I’m hopeful this will come through fairly quickly. Because in part we desperately need it.

That is We need to “bring on” new researchers, scientists, and engineers to what they can productively be, simply to just keep up with the needs of mankind.

This is an interesting dichotomy, but it feels perhaps just a single axis.

The consequences of me not going to the gym are very real and concrete, especially as I get older. If I don’t walk around, use my body, and move in effective ways, I will suffer sluggishness, poor sleep, body aches, and general decline.

The same goes for the mind, I think. If I don’t use my mind and just sit back, consuming and moving around boxes and not engaging with the world, my mind becomes less sharp. More slippery, less capable, lazier and less effective.

These “gym” tasks then become a necessity. Not just desirable in a philosophical sense, but something very concrete that will affect me and my life.

Meanwhile, at work, the consequences of not doing a particular task perfectly may be minimal. No one will really care and few people will be affected. Most of the “work” being done at work is busy-ness for the sake of business – moving money around, “improving” what already functions, bickering through political structures, jumping through hoops for management’s amusement.

Minimizing these tasks as much as possible is the desirable outcome, I think. AI is one answer to that, I suppose, but it comes at a great cost in other areas. The real question is why we bother performing tasks that benefit no one at all.

While I don’t disagree with the point, I think it’s also missing another important consideration. Like exercise being need to maintain ability, it’s important to be able to do things ourselves that are reasonably handled by AI.

Most of the draw in my field for using AI is that it significantly reduces the amount of complexity that a worker needs to handle to get a job done. Or to put it the other way around, it significantly increases the amount of complexity that can be allowed in the system before it becomes unmanageable. The problem being that when (not if) complexity expands to the point that even the AI is helpless to deal with it, it will be well beyond the point that the human can go in and fix it.

In my professional experience, the people who are raving about AI are those who don´t know much of anything, those who have been going through the motions without understanding much of anything.

Suddenly they have discovered in AI a decent search engine, a good starting point, an instruction manual without having to read or understand much, they have found a magical bag of tricks.

These people form AI psychosis very fast and I wonder what will happen to their already weak intellect once they are weaned off the AI craze.

Because at some point they will be weaned off. Once the AI companies (there is only two of them) begin to charge the real cost of “SAAS/Web” AI most people won’t be able to afford it.

One thing I’ve found LLMs to be good for is discussion: intellectual sparring, if you will, bouncing thoughts off it, getting critical comments and feedback, honing your arguments, and so on.

In the work/gym analogy, this is akin to using LLMs in the gym – except not to lift weights for you, but rather to BE the weights.

It shifts the conversation from ‘what AI can do’ to “what people should still do themselves”, which is a valuable perspective.

It adds another angle by explaining when autonomous AI agents are more suitable than rule-based automation.
