Friday Squid Blogging: Prosthetic Tentacle

Impressive:

Designed for a class project while getting her degree at the Industrial Design Department at the University of Washington, Kaylene Kau has not only exploded perceptions of how prosthetic arms should look, but sent an entire subset of Japanese Hentai fans to their feet, cheering her on. If that's not worth an employer's attention, I don't know what is. Good luck designing the future, Kaylene!

Excellent.

I've always said, should I be unfortunate enough to lose an arm, that I'd opt for the classic pirate hook. I've changed my mind, now I want a tentacle.

nice, but just one big tentacle? how about a long tentacle with five little ones that spread out at the end...oh, wait, that's a hand.

Slightly off topic (but squiddish nevertheless), you might enjoy this photo I just found:

Seems simpler than trying to replicate the human hand.

I really hope they meant anime (animation) fans, not hentai (cartoon pornography) fans.

Dave AronsonDecember 18, 2010 1:07 PM

@Beta: I think they do mean hentai. I'm told that tentacles are fairly common there. Even if that's untrue, tentacle hentai is at least a very common meme.

She might have just played too much World of Warcraft - many monsters there look like this one: http://www.wowhead.com/...

It needs the opposable thumb. If the last segment of the tentacle was split for pinching -- to be able to grasp the key it can dangle, and insert that in a lock -- it would improve the design for utility.

@ Bruce,

Breaking news in the UK there have been arrests in four UK citties of a number of men (some Bangladeshie). Supposadly they where plotting a major series of attacks in the UK on behalf of AQ.

Although apparently not related to Sweden or other recent terrorist activity.

So very little info so far

@kate: "It needs the opposable thumb."

...or suction cups.
