Some applications developers are so security conscious they mask both the username and the password. My employer has on online self-guided training application that uses that security mechanism to verify that the user has completed the module. Not sure what security risk they are concerned with there.

@ closer,

"some news for you schneier:"

I'm assuming that you live in the UK from the newspaper source and your command of the language, therefor I'm curious as to why the curt almost rude opening?

As for the pictures it's a bit of a non event, his identity is not particularly secret and his face has appeared in publicaly available photos before.

However his wife's social circle is partialy revealed which is embarising for them, and potentialy other information could be derived from that alone.

It appears in the UK that the wives of senior anti terror officers etc have a habit of revealing a little to much via the internet either by way of trade or socialising...

Protocol question:

Should anthropomorphized squid wear pants? If so, which arms get shirt sleeves and which get trouser legs?

Time for more coffee...
