The postdoc who published this is Zoidberg, from Futurama (using a thinly veiled pseudonym, of course). This is merely a ploy for some dastardly Zoidbergian plot, no doubt to capture and eat vast quantities of Humboldt squid.

For a second I thought it was about giant squid in Humboldt County, CA.
