Friday Squid Blogging: Cephalopod Conference

There's a Cephalopod Conference going on right now in Hobart, Australia. It's the Cephalopod International Advisory Council International Symposium. (I'll bet you didn't even know that cephalopods had an international advisory council. Or what they need advice about.) In the coming Fridays I hope to present some of the more interesting papers from this conference.

Do they have a BOF on cooking?

"Do they have a BOF on cooking?"

We can only hope.

"Do they have a BOF on cooking?"

Look near the bottom of the page for a link to The Silver Squid Project. After advising them, the organization eats them. Typical.

Boy, things must be pretty boring down in Hobart...

Bah, cephalopod conferences are always full of suckers.

One motive for the Hobart conference was of to tackle the threat posed to squid populations by calamari consumption. Namely this man...

@ Tank

Funny. Squid consumption, and poaching in particular, is a real issue:

Not to mention the need to reduce squid-astrophies:

"An 18-wheel semi-truck overturned east of Murphy Crossing Road on Riverside Drive on Wednesday morning, spilling 38,500 pounds of frozen squid and taking down a power pole, cutting electricity to about 1,100 people in the Aromas area."

Dangerous stuff.

Wouldn't you know it? I lived just up the road at the time and didn't even hear about it. I would have quickly volunteered my freezer to help clean this mess up...

Greetings from a Hobartian (who just left there a week ago). But as fascinating as cephalopodology is, I still fail to grasp the connection to security. Even the giant squid that washed up on the beach a while back wasn't a threat to the security of anything but one's nostrils... :)

Here's an image of one of the key speakers at the conference:

Too many fingers in the pie no doubt.

Is it merely coincidence that the conference washeld in Hobart, which is also the name of a manufacturer of industrial kitchen equipment? Run, squid, run!
