WikiLeaks may have exposed the CIA’s ability to hack into phones, televisions, cars—pretty much everything, but according to internationally renowned security technologist and author Bruce Schneier, it isn’t the intelligence agencies you should be worried about. He’s more concerned that these technologies have been around for decades. Bruce is sharing three things to be concerned about with Kristina Guerrero.
1. Privacy Priorities
Privacy is not about something to hide. Privacy is about being an autonomous person. It’s a fundamental human right and a fundamental human need. When we don’t have privacy, we feel unsafe. When we’re watched, we feel like prey. So privacy is important for society to flourish.
2. Invasion of Privacy
Companies like Facebook are free because they surveil everything their users do and use that data to influence their behavior. Apps on our phone collect data about our location, our contacts, our calendar, and use that as an ultimate revenue stream. It’s not just your social media tracking you… that phone also has its “eye” on you! Any tech ‘smart’ is probably outsmarting you—even toys and entertainment.
3. Defensive Measures
Right now there aren’t a lot of good ways to protect yourself. We need our smartphones and other gadgets to be fully functioning adults in the 21st century. The way we’re going to protect ourselves is through law. If we’re truly worried about our privacy, we need to advocate for political change. That’s going to be the only way.
