Just to clarify, if it wasn’t obvious:
I went to the current cartoon (which isn’t subscription-only). The I copied the image url. Unsurprisingly, it was build from the date with no random pre, post or infix. So just replacing the date gives you access to any image from the archive.
A classic “hack” (and even with quotes it’s using the term lightly). But, hey, at least they don’t allow directory listing.

chuckles careful, or Bruce will be forced to warn any site which isn’t “free as beer” that he’s linking… and the incoming traffic will be as security savvy as any!

One reading, “Petrified Squid” I thought ugh oh, is this the cephalopod equivalent of “Big Brother” intimidating little sister.

Because my first thought was how do you turn what is basically “jelly in a bag” (ie a sack of skin filled with protein strands and a lot of water which is why whales amongst others need them to “drink”) into recognisable stone when it’s already in brine…

Just shows that anythings possible under the right conditions 8)

It has been a long time since undergrad paleontology, but I think the fossilized squid is actually a belemnite. Belemnites were “big” back in the Jurassic, alas, like much of cephalopoda, they became extinct at the end of the Mesozoic.

Edward is correct. The fossil that is shown on the website is an inner shell of a belemnite, something that looked like a squid. Actually, most of what is shown are broken ends of these shells. Wikipedia has a good entry on belemnites.
