Nice. Assignments are available in PS, PDF, DOC, TXT, PPT… depending upon assignment number.

@Sideline: oddly enough, no. Winter quarter always runs January thru March, so Winter 2006 started in January 2006.

Interestingly, Josh Benaloh “disses” Bruce’s Applied Cryto book by calling it a “popular” book, but not a “good” book. See the first 10 minutes or so of the first class video. Josh even goes on to say there are many errors in Applied Crypto and warns the students that if he finds this book on developers bookshelves, he becomes worried.

I think that’s the first time I’ve heard anyone “diss” Applied Crypto.

@bobm: Download the “Downloadable WebViewer Archive,” it contains the raw .wmv in a .zip file.

Yep, in his first lecture Josh Benaloh complained
that MD5 hash algo realization in the Applied Cryto book
was flawed. Could anybody confirm that ?

Bruce, did you actually watch the videos? the first lecturer was picking on Applied Cryptography 🙂

Bruce Schneier June 4, 2006 4:52 PM

“Bruce, did you actually watch the videos? the first lecturer was picking on Applied Cryptography :-)”

That’s okay. I’ve picked on the book myself.

@Sideline: “I’m pretty sure Winter 2006 is in the future.”

Having just had the year’s first heavy frost this morning, I can assure you this is not so. You might also believe (as I type this) that the 6th of June 2006 is in the future, but for me it is almost half over.

@Jungsonn: This states/demonstrates only that MD5 is broken (more precisely, its collission-resistance) but not why anything in Bruce’s Applied Crypto book should be wrong.

True, Bruce’s book doesn’t mention the vulnerability of MD5, but this is easily explained by the fact that it wasn’t known yet at the time the book was printed.

@Bruce

your new book, the one expected in december, is it less or more technical than “Practical Cryptography”?
